Credit Report PDF Won't Extract? The Readable Forms
One useful skill to practice.
Garbled PDF text on your own report is a legal problem, not a tech one. The law offers other forms of the file — and a trained person to explain it.

Your report PDF extracts a garbled balance. What is the compliant move?
Review all questions and explanations
- Your report PDF extracts a garbled balance. What is the compliant move?
Answer: Read the value on the source document itself, or request the disclosure in another form — never write a field you cannot read
A wrong value in a letter is an unsupportable statement — and untrue statements about creditworthiness are unlawful under CROA. The document, another form, or trained personnel are the routes.
- What does §1681h give a reader whose file disclosure is hard to use?
Answer: The disclosure in writing by default, another form if the agency has one (in person, phone after written request, electronic), and trained personnel who must explain the information
Section 1681h is the lawful route when the document is unreadable — including the right to a human explanation under §1681h(c).
- What should software do when its extraction confidence is low?
Answer: Show the source page and ask the person to confirm or correct — never auto-fill an unread field
The document stays the authority and the person is the check on the machine — a guessed value that reaches a letter is a statement the consumer cannot support.
Your take-away checklist
- Rule first: if you cannot read the field, do not write the field.
- Identify which fields are uncertain — balance, limit, dates, status, ownership are the ones that matter.
- Open the source document itself and read the value by eye — the document is the authority.
- If the file is unreadable, request the §609 disclosure in another form: in person, by phone after a written request, or electronically if offered.
- Or use the statutory option: trained personnel must explain the information furnished under §609.
- Other formats exist: Braille, large print or audio (about three weeks); phone and mail orders within 15 days; online access immediate.
- If a tool extracted the value, confirm it against the page — never let a guessed digit into a letter.
- File the verified value with the document it was read from.
Read the source, keep the context.
