Wrong Name or Address on Your Credit Report: What to Check

1. Record the entry as printed: the name or address exactly, the report date, the bureau.
2. Sort the finding: former address you lived at, a garbled version of yours, or not yours at all.
3. For a garbled version: pull a document showing the correct form (lease, utility bill, ID).
4. For a foreign address: check whether foreign accounts or inquiries are attached to it.
5. Check name variants against names you have actually used on credit applications.
6. Note whether the same error appears on your reports from the other bureaus.
7. Draft one sentence naming the wrong field and the correct version your document shows.
8. Keep copies of any document you plan to send — never originals.
