CHECKDISPUTE | FREE PRACTICE CHECKLIST An Account You Don't Recognize on Your Credit Report 1. Record the entry exactly as printed: creditor name, account fragment, date opened, balance, status. 2. Check whether it appears as an account or only as an inquiry — an inquiry may be prescreening. 3. Compare the name against your accounts' issuing banks — retail cards report under the bank, not the store. 4. Check for a sale or transfer: any letter naming a new servicer or collector for a debt you know. 5. Contact the company on the entry and record the date, who you reached and what it confirmed. 6. If still unexplained, request a file disclosure to see the sources and who pulled your file. 7. Only if the transactions are genuinely not yours, note the identity-theft route exists — it requires your statement to that effect. 8. Write one sentence stating what the entry is and which check resolved it — or which did not.
