CHECKDISPUTE | FREE PRACTICE CHECKLIST Debt Validation vs. Credit Report Dispute: Two Processes 1. Identify the problem: is it collection conduct (calls, letters, amounts demanded) or a wrong field on the credit report? 2. For collection conduct: note the date you received the validation information — the 30-day dispute window runs from there. 3. For a wrong report field: name the bureau, the entry, and the exact field that contradicts your records. 4. If both problems exist, plan both letters — one to the collector, one to the bureau or furnisher. 5. If the validation window passed, note that the credit-report dispute route remains open. 6. Record what each letter asks the recipient to do: pause collection, or reinvestigate a field. 7. Keep proof of what you sent, to whom, and when. 8. Calendar the response window that applies to each route you used.
