Record the account as printed: creditor name, account number, balance field, report page and the report's own date. 2. Pull your proof of payment: the confirmation, cancelled check or statement, and its posting date. 3. Note whether the payment posted before or after the report's date. 4. Pull the next statement after your payment and check for interest that accrued in the gap. 5. Compare the report's balance field with your records for the same period. 6. If you settled rather than paid in full, find the settlement correspondence and its terms. 7. Write one sentence: the reported figure, your documented figure, and the two dates. 8. Confirm you are keeping originals and sending copies with anything you mail.
