Compare its balance, date opened and payment history against your own accounts and statements. 3. Check whether the name could be the issuing bank behind a retail card you hold. 4. Note whether the same debt appears more than once under different names. 5. Check whether the unfamiliar name appears only as an inquiry — a possible prescreening entry. 6.
