CHECKDISPUTE | FREE PRACTICE CHECKLIST Closed Account Still Showing a Balance? What to Check 1. Record the account as printed: creditor name, account number, report page and report date. 2. Write down the reported status — open or closed — and the reported date opened and date closed. 3. Pull your own record of the closure: the confirmation, the final statement, its date. 4. Compare the reported close date with your record; note any mismatch with both dates. 5. Record the reported balance and compare it with your statement for the same period. 6. Check whether interest accrued between your last statement and the payoff explains the gap. 7. If the status says open but you closed it, write one sentence: the field, the reported value, your document's value. 8. Note the furnisher's address as printed on the report for any direct dispute you send yourself.
